Getting Started

Lesson 1 Chapter 1

Welcome to the Risu Press JLPT N5 Crash Course! You've made an awesome choice in getting started, and we'll be here to walk you through what you need to know to get "JLPT N5 ready"!

If you're new to Japanese, no problem – this course covers some of the fundamentals and basics you need to get started learning Japanese. Most importantly, it shows you the kanji you need to be able to take (and pass!) the JLPT N5 exam.

The JLPT – Japanese Language Proficiency Test – is broken up into 5 parts, N5 through N1. It used to be just 4 through 1, but then they added a fifth level to even out the gaps and appended "N" to the levels, perhaps to denote "new."

As far as kanji go, there are the fewest in N5, and the most (and most difficult) in N1. For the N5 test, we have identified 82 of the most common kanji you'll see, and we introduce these to you in this course. If you happen to have our Kanji Poster Set, these kanji are on the red background, and take up the majority of the first 3 rows.

Grab a pen, some flashcards, and a quiet study space, and get ready to start!
